  • Ram is the boy who got the first prize.
  • Ram won the race and he got the first prize.
  • Who got the first prize? Ram
  • What did Ram get ? the first prize.
  • Who won the race? Ram
  • And what did he get? the first prize.
  • Why did he get the first prize?
  • Because he won the race.
  • We waste our resources.
  • We =subject. waste = verb  our resources= object.
  • My mother served coffee to all my friends.
  • My mother =subject. served= verb
  • what did she serve? answer coffee = object
  • To whom= indirect object . to my friends.
  • My mother cooks well.
  • My mother =subject
  • cooks-verb
  • How?       well=complement.
  • What is a sentence? is a group of words which makes complete sense.
  • The sun rises in the early morning.
  • The Sun rises. Sentence is complete.
  • In the early morning. What happens?
  • It is incomplete. It is a phrase only.
  • What is a complex sentence?
  • It is an extension of simple sentence.
  • It has connectives such as relative pronouns or conjunction.
  • Robert is the doctor whom I met in the hospital.
  • Robert is the doctor. Main clause. why?
  • It has a subject and a verb and tells something about the doctor. The sentence is complete.
  • Whom I met in the hospital? very vague.
  • It is a subordinate clause.
  • and does not convey any meaning.
  • When you combine the first sentence( main clause) it means more.

  • What is a compound sentence?
  • It is a sentence  with two or more main clauses( at least) connected by conjunctions.

  • She visits all the classes.. another main clause.
  • and-is a conjunction.
  • Both sentences have complete meaning so they are called main clauses.
  • Note: A  main clause  can have one or more
  • subordinate clauses whether it is a complex sentence construction or a compound sentence  one.
